Frank Gray has the First Amendment protecting his right to speak about a subject that he obviously knows little about (With risks, why even carry a gun?, April 30). His research and opinion was from people he has known or met and two police officers – three people who informed him they had a gun. People dont even realize most people who carry a gun dont advertise it or even let anyone know they are carrying a gun for protection.
I am around the great city of Fort Wayne every day with my handgun, and no one even knows it is there. I do not carry a weapon because it makes me tough or cool. I carry a gun because I believe it is my right to protect myself and other citizens of our community. I am not a vigilante looking for a fight and prefer avoiding trouble at all costs. I am a father, grandfather, husband, neighbor, employee, veteran, and I am also a member of this community.
You can always find a bad example if you look for it, and Gray is using a bad example to form his opinion. I suggest Gray actually meet some everyday people who carry a gun and who take on the great responsibility. These people have made a commitment to prepare, train and keep safe themselves and this community. Contact me I will show you this community.
As for Chief Rusty Yorks comments, they are formed by political positioning and it makes it much easier to blame the guns than to blame the lack of officers or the ability of the police chief to do his job within a budget that is limited. The federal prosecutions for gun crimes are absolutely ridiculous, and having 16 prosecutions out of 400,000 illegal attempts to purchase shows the lack of willingness to actually solve the issue by our federal government.
If Gray is going to keep writing, he should at least spend some time researching what he is writing about. He can have an opinion and he can speak it. But ignorance of the facts is not writing, and since he works for The Journal Gazette, it is his responsibility to speak the facts not just ignorant gibberish.
