Chargers cruise to NHC girls tennis crown

At the last, the title came easily for the Carroll girls tennis team.

The visiting Chargers wrapped up the undisputed NHC championship Friday with a 5-0 whitewash of Columbia City, winning all five matches in straight sets. Rachel Sutton, Ashley Hoagland and Jenna Jackson claimed the singles victories, losing just five games among them.

Mackenzie Schoeff and Audrey Mallers won 6-1, 6-1 and Taylor Stanchin and Catherine Curtis won 6-3, 6-3 in doubles.


BISHOP DWENGER 9, CONCORDIA 1: A four-run third was the big inning for the Saints, who are a game up in the SAC with two to play. Jordan Schneider pitched a four-hitter for Dwenger, and Alli Dennie hit a three-run homer.

LAKEWOOD PARK CHRISTIAN 6, PRAIRIE HEIGHTS 4: Three runs in the bottom of the seventh rescued host Lakewood Park. Mikeila Boroff pitched a four-hitter and struck out 13.

HOMESTEAD 12, HERITAGE 5: A 17-hit attack sparked Homestead. Bailey Wills and Tori Strelec had three hits and two RBI apiece.


CONCORDIA 5, BISHOP DWENGER 3: Concordia scored single runs in five straight innings to beat Dwenger at Shoaff Park. Brian Gremaux tripled and Zach McLaughlin and Jake Reid doubled for the Cadets, who took advantage of three Dwenger errors.

LEO 3, NORTH SIDE 0: Jordan Hissong and Tanner Hartman combined on a five-hit shutout for the Lions at Leo. Treg Haberkorn drove in two of Leo’s three runs.

HOMESTEAD 8, CANTERBURY 5: The Spartans overcame a five-run Canterbury first behind Damon Larkey and D.J. Moore, who pitched 6 2/3 innings of six-hit, scoreless relief. Matt Volz went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs.

WHITKO 5, COLUMBIA CITY 3: Zach Snep (3 for 4), Ethan Nicodemus (2 for 3), Garrett Smiley (2 for 3) and Hunter Sroufe (2 for 3) led a 10-hit attack for Whitko.
