Irish rally for lacrosse tourney win

SOUTH BEND – Freshman attackman Matt Kavanagh scored four goals in the second half and Notre Dame rallied past Detroit 9-7 on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament.

Seeded second in the 16-team tournament, the Irish (11-4) trailed 5-1 at halftime and were down 7-3 entering the fourth quarter against the Titans (5-10), seemingly on the verge of a huge upset.

Kavanagh, who has 10 multiple-goal games, tied it at 7-all with 10:10 left in regulation, then won it just under 5 minutes later when he swooped right to left across the front of the crease and flipped in a shot over the right shoulder of Detroit goalie A.J. Levell.

Brandon Beauregard had three goals and Alex Maini scored twice for the Titans.
