INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Star’s century-old Indianapolis headquarters would be transformed into apartments and retail shops under a deal being negotiated with the newspaper’s parent company.
President and Publisher Karen Crotchfelt announced in July that the newspaper was looking for a new location that better suits its size and needs in a digital age.
Tony Knoble of The Whitsett Group told The Star (http://indy.st/12jpzwS) on Friday that his company was close to a deal with Star owner Gannett Co.
The Whitsett Group plans to construct three five-story apartment buildings. It will incorporate the newspaper building’s frame but demolish its interior.
Crotchfelt said the project will preserve “important pieces of history” and add to the evolution of downtown.
The Star has occupied the site since 1907.
