Gas leak in downtown Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE – Deputy Chief Mark Nelson of the Fort Wayne Fire Department said construction workers Friday struck a gas line between Main and Berry streets on Clinton Street, across from the Allen County Courthouse.

Workers in nearby office buildings could smell fumes, but weren’t evacuated, Nelson said. He said the emergency call came in around 2 p.m. and firefighters were ready to leave the scene about a half hour later.

A NIPSCO employee said it is uncertain how long it will take to repair the gas line, which an excavator machine struck while crews worked on a sidewalk improvement and beautification project.
