How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

Even a decline in the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits failed to give stock prices a boost. Markets drifted lower in early trading, moved between gains and losses in the afternoon, then ended slightly lower.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 22.50 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 15,082.62.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 6.02 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,626.67.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 4.10 points, or 0.1 percent, to 3,409.17.
For the week:
The Dow is up 108.66, or 0.7 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 12.25, or 0.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 30.54, or 0.9 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,978.48 points, or 15.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 200.48 points, or 14.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 389.66 points, or 12.9 percent.
