Mother charged in battery, neglect of 4-year-old

Harris

A Warsaw woman has been preliminarily charged with battering her 4-year-old daughter, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department said today.

Sherena Michele Harris, 26, was being held in the county jail on $2,000 bond, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

It said sheriff's deputies and officials from the Department of Child Services responded to a home in the 1600 block of East County Road 200 North on Monday to perform a home inspection.

As caseworkers interviewed Harris, the statement said, they saw what appeared to be bruises on the girl.

Harris was brought to the sheriff's department to continue the interview, the statement said, and subsequently told police she struck her daughter with a belt and had previously taped her mouth shut.

Harris was arrested on preliminary charges of felony battery resulting in bodily injury to a victim younger than 14, as well as felony neglect of a dependent, the statement said. It said officers are continuing to investigate, along with the county prosecutor's office.
