Heritage to honor late assistant baseball coach

Heritage to honor late assistant

Today’s makeup baseball game between Heritage and Central Noble will include a special tribute to the late Don Grabner, who was an assistant baseball coach at Heritage for several years.

Grabner died April 22 and would have turned 91 Sunday.

“The Heritage seniors wanted to do a fitting tribute, so they came up with the idea of all players wearing a ‘GRABNER’ jersey – kind of like Major League Baseball’s annual tribute to Jackie Robinson where everyone around the league wears No. 42,” Heritage baseball coach Dean Lehrman wrote in an email. “Interestingly, Grabner’s number for most of his years at Heritage was 24.”

There will be a pregame ceremony with Heritage athletic director Cheri Gilbert, who will read a short tribute to Grabner.

Then there will be player introductions, and all of the Patriots will be announced as Cole “Grabner,” Conner “Grabner,” Wil “Grabner,” etc.

“The man meant an awful lot to many young men who have grown up in this program, including a few of the fathers of the present roster,” Lehrman wrote. “As Don liked to say, ‘We teach more than just baseball here.’ ”

The game will begin at 5 p.m. at Heritage’s baseball field.
