Runner killed by train is identified

A man trying to outrun a train who was struck and killed late Friday in downtown New Haven has been identified.

Derek R. Sowers, 22, of Woodburn, was apparently try to "beat the train" by running on foot across the tracks, according to a statement issued by the New Haven Police Department.

His companions told police they were walking nearby and heard a train whistle. They all ran toward the crossing in the 500 block of Broadway, but they told officers that Sowers was the only one who kept running onto the tracks.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 11:10 p.m., and Sowers was declared dead, police said.

The death remains under investigation, police said Monday.
