A Fort Wayne Fire Department rescue boat approaches the boat launch at Shoaff Park carrying a body recovered on Sunday from St. Joseph River.

Body in river; ID unknown

An Indiana conservation officer searching for a missing man found a body Sunday in the St. Joseph River near IPFW, authorities said.

About 11 a.m., a man’s body was pulled from the river, said officer Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne police spokeswoman. It was not yet clear whether the body belonged to the missing man, she said, declining to name that person.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the identity of the body found. Investigators do not suspect foul play in the death, Foster said.

She said the man’s family reported him missing Monday, and his car was found by the boat ramp at Shoaff Park, which is bordered by the St. Joseph River. Police, along with city firefighters and state conservation officers, began searching for him in that area Tuesday, she said.

Believing the missing man was possibly in the river, the fire department’s dive team helped in the search, as did conservation officers with sonar devices.

Sunday morning, conservation officer Rodney Clear found the body downstream from Shoaff Park, authorities said.
