Statement as distributed Monday by the Fort Wayne Community Schools:
Fort Wayne Community Schools’ elementary schools will have orientation and early registration for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students in April. For the first time, all schools will hold the orientations simultaneously with kindergarten orientation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, and pre-K orientation at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9. Pre-K orientation was rescheduled after the threat of severe weather led to the cancellation of the event last week.
At the event, parents will be able to visit their child’s school to learn more about FWCS’ pre-K and full-day kindergarten programs and register their child for the 2013-14 school year. Parents will also learn how to help their child transition to a new program and/or new school, meet teachers, see classrooms, find out what immunizations are needed and learn about transportation.
Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 are eligible to attend kindergarten. Children who will be 4 years old on or before Aug. 1 may be eligible to attend pre-kindergarten.
Pre-K programs are offered at Abbett, Adams, Bloomingdale, Fairfield, Forest Park, Franke Park, Harrison Hill, Holland, Indian Village, Maplewood, Nebraska, Northcrest, Scott, South Wayne and Study elementary schools. Additionally, students living in the Brentwood area may attend pre-K at Holland; students in the Lindley area may attend pre-K at Indian Village; students in the Waynedale area may attend pre-K at Maplewood; and students in the Washington area may attend pre-K at Nebraska. Parents who are unsure which school their child will attend can call Student Services at 467-2120.
While full-day kindergarten is available to all students, there are a limited number of pre-K spaces available. If there are more pre-K applicants than space available, FWCS will use selection guidelines as prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education, including the academic needs of students, to admit students. During orientation, parents will be able to sign up for a time to bring their child for an assessment of skills.
For registration, parents should bring a birth certificate, two proofs of residence, such as a utility bill, medical bill or mortgage or rental papers, and the child’s immunization history.
More information and copies of the forms are available on the FWCS website, http://www.fwcs.k12.in.us/studentservices/kindergarten.php.
