Dakota Mathias commits to Purdue

Purdue basketball notched its first commitment of the class of 2014 with Ohio guard Dakota Mathias entering the fold today.

We are attempting to get Mathias, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, on the horn now. Until then, here's our story on the sharpshooter from Sunday's paper and our video interview with him Saturday.

Just spoke to Mathias, who made his decision after talking to his parents on the ride home from the Run-n-Slam today. A bit of what he had to say below.

JG: You said yesterday that you were close to a decision. Did you kind of know in the back of your mind it would be coming this quickly?

Mathias: I knew I was getting close, leaning towards them. After talking to my parents on the way home and stuff, I just knew it was time.

JG: What did you talk about during that conversation with them?

Mathias: After my official, I had a really good feeling about it, but I just wanted to see a few more campuses and things. But after thinking about it some more, I just told my dad I just think it’s the right fit, and I don’t see any reason to hold out any longer.

JG: When you told coach Matt Painter and the staff the news, how did they react?

Mathias: They were very excited, very excited. I think it’s going to be a perfect situation.

JG: Painter has said he needs some skill guys for his team, guys who can shoot the ball. How big of a need to you feel you fill for the Boilermakers?

Mathias: According to the coaches, I’m a very big need. They want guys with some skill, some high IQ guys. I think I bring that: A little versatility, can shoot it a little bit and pass the ball, just make smart decisions.

JG: Your decision is out of the way, you've got the rest of the summer to improve and then high school season, obviously. What's next for you?

Mathias: It’s a lot of time to work on some individual things, keep improving my skills and get in the weight room a little bit.
