Man hit by train dies

A man trying to outrun a train was struck and killed late Friday at a railroad crossing in downtown New Haven, police said.

Witnesses reported that they and the man were walking to a nearby gas station and heard a train whistle. The group began running toward the crossing in the 500 block of Broadway, hoping to "beat the train," according to New Haven police.

The witnesses told police they stopped running because they were not going to cross the tracks before the train reached the crossing.

The man, however, kept running, and the train hit him.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 11:10 p.m., and the man was declared dead, police said.

The victim's name was not released.

The accident remains under investigation.
