Man, 25, jailed in mother’s stabbing

A Fort Wayne man accused of stabbing his mother in the neck with a knife last month was formally charged Thursday.

Brian O. Abernathy, 25, is charged with felony battery and two counts of resisting law enforcement.

On April 24, Abernathy entered his mother’s apartment with her after returning home from a friend’s house and asked for painkillers to relieve a headache, court documents said.

After his mother gave him the medicine, he became irate and took a knife out of his pocket and stabbed her in the neck, documents said.

Abernathy was later arrested and told officers he “heard voices and was paranoid that people were after him,” according to court documents.

Officers took Abernathy to Parkview Behavioral Health for evaluation. As officers were escorting him into a hospital elevator, Abernathy began pulling away and threw the officers against the elevator wall, court records said.

One of the officers used a stun gun twice before he could be restrained.

Abernathy, of the 2200 block of Fairfield Avenue, was being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.
