Moped hits dog, badly injuring rider

A Warsaw man was seriously injured Wednesday after his moped struck a 93-pound German shepherd near Claypool, police said.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies and emergency workers responded to County Road 50 West, north of Claypool, about 1:36 p.m.

Officers found Robert L. Hawley, 84, of Warsaw, in the road being attended to by family members.

Police said Hawley had been traveling north on the 1964 red Allstate 788 moped/scooter when the dog ran into the road. He was unable to avoid hitting the dog. Hawley was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital with head injuries. Police said he was in serious condition Thursday morning.

Police did not have information about the extent of the dog’s injuries.
