Emergency workers transport Robert L. Hawley, 84, of Warsaw, after his moped collided with a German shepherd on a county road near Claypool Wednesday afternoon.

Rider airlifted after moped hits dog

A Warsaw man was seriously injured Wednesday after his moped collided with a 93-pound German shepherd near Claypool, police said.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies and emergency personnel were called at 1:36 p.m. to County Road 50 West, north of Claypool.

Officers found Robert L. Hawley, 84, of Warsaw, in the roadway being attended to by family members, the county crash investigation team said in a statement.

The Multi-Township EMS immediately requested a Samaritan helicopter because Hawley had head injuries, the crash team reported.

Police said Hawley had been traveling north on the 1964 red Allstate 788 moped/scooter when the dog ran into the road. He was unable to avoid hitting the dog.

Hawley was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital, and police said he was reported to be in serious condition Thursday morning. Police did not have information about the extent of the dog’s injuries.
