Donnelly on visit to Pakistan

Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., reportedly led a congressional delegation on a visit to Pakistan this week.

Donnelly's office confirmed Thursday that Donnelly "is currently on official Senate Armed Services Committee travel" but gave no details, citing security reasons. The freshman senator is a member of the panel.

News media in Pakistan reported Wednesday and Thursday that Donnelly is leading a five-member delegation that includes Democratic Sens. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Democratic Rep. Peter Welch of Vermont.

Media reported Thursday that the delegation and Richard Olson, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, met Wednesday with Jalil Abbas Jilani, Pakistan's foreign secretary, and other civilian and military leaders.

"The two sides exchanged views on the current status of bilateral relations, upcoming elections in Pakistan, and regional issues including the situation in Afghanistan," according to a Foreign Office statement quoted by Pakistan Today.

Donnelly's office said later that the delegation did not meet with former military ruler Parvez Musharraf, who is under house arrest in Islamabad, and that reports of such a meeting were erroneous.
