52-year-old rescued from St. Marys dies

– A 52-year-old man rescued from the St. Marys River on Monday afternoon died later that night, according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

The man’s name was not released because his family had not been notified. His cause of death was ruled an accidental drowning, the coroner’s office said Tuesday.

At 3:05 p.m. Monday, 911 dispatchers received a report that the man was in the river by the Main Street Bridge, near Rockhill Street. Divers with the Fort Wayne Fire Department were dispatched, and they began searching for him.

At 3:26 p.m., the man was pulled from the river, not breathing and without a pulse. Authorities estimated he spent close to 20 minutes underwater.

Medics worked to revive him, and about 16 minutes after he was taken from the water, he regained a pulse, authorities said.

The man, a city resident, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital where he died at 10:30 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

Kevin Johnson, who was on the bridge during the rescue, said he was friends with the man. Johnson said the man had been sitting with him and decided he wanted to go for a swim.
