A 26-year-old Fort Wayne woman was sentenced to six months in jail and a year on probation for using her children to help her try to steal clothes from Walmart.
LaQuwiesh Woodson, of the 4000 block of Hanna Street, was charged in October with neglect of a dependent and theft. In August, she was seen by loss-prevention workers trying to steal underwear from a Walmart.
According to court documents, Woodson stuffed the merchandise in two Walmart shopping bags and then gave them to her daughters – ages 5 and 12 – telling them to leave the store with the bags.
The children were picked up by loss-prevention workers, but Woodson and another woman scooted out unnoticed, leaving the girls in the store alone. At no point did she contact the store or the police to inquire about the welfare of the children, according to court documents.
She pleaded guilty to the neglect charge in March.
On Tuesday, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull dismissed the theft charge and sentenced Woodson to 1 1/2 years in jail but ordered one year suspended and to be served on probation. Woodson must undergo parenting classes and perform community service, according to court documents.
