Saving a friend’s restaurant

When Mike Adams and his wife, Lorie, bought Billy’s in Monroeville a year and a half ago, it was not just as an investment but to help a friend.

The restaurant, owned by former classmates Bob Carney and his wife, had fallen on hard times and was near foreclosure.

“I was a patron there, but I didn’t want to see the family get dragged down the way they do when the banks come down the way they do,” Adams says.

He initially leased the restaurant, 18000 Lincoln Highway E., but recently took over operations and is trying to rebuild the restaurant – and its image – that his friend began in 1982.

The building is being remodeled during the day and, at night, the original recipes are being served. The predominantly Mexican menu features fajitas, Mexican egg rolls and Mexican bruschetta, but haddock, pork chops and steaks have been added.

“On our new menus, have a picture of Bob in honor of him and a statement that says, ‘In memory of Bob Carney. The Billy’s tradition of good food, spirits and friends will never be forgotten,’ ” Adams says.

Billy’s is open 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. It will be open Tuesdays after remodeling is complete.

Mother’s Day special

The Barr Street Café at Anthis Career Center, 1200 Barr St., is hosting a special in honor of Mother’s Day next week.

The three-course menu, which costs $14.95, features an entrée, soup or salad and dessert. Among the offerings are maple-glazed salmon, braised brisket with a bourbon peach glaze and shrimp and scallop stroganoff over pappardelle pasta.

Tapas dinner

Ivy Tech Community College culinary students are concluding its themed dinner series Thursday night in a small way.

Special Cuisines class students have created a tapas-style dinner that features a variety of small plates, including mussel and crawfish chowder, tapenade on crostini with pickled vegetables, bacon-wrapped pheasant tenders, pork and mushroom pot stickers, shepherd’s pie and Caesar salad with black-bread croutons.

The dinner, in the hospitality room of the Coliseum campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd., costs $20 a person, cash or check only. Wine is available at an extra cost.

Reservations are required and will be taken for times between 5 and 6:30 p.m.; call 480-2002 at least 24 hours in advance.

Around town

•Construction is slated to begin in the next couple weeks for Cosmos Restaurant, 9807 Lima Road. Contractor John Fyfe said the new building should be completed in early September. A Cosmos location on West Washington Center Road closed in August when Petros Bourounis was no longer able to operate the restaurant. Bourounis’ son, Panos, owns the Cosmos Restaurant on St. Joe Center Road.

•Pembroke Bakery, 300 E. Main St., tweeted on Monday that it has signed a lease in the Star Bank Building, 127 W. Berry St., for the Pembroke Espress Coffee Shop. The shop will offer coffee, tea, smoothies and baked goods from Pembroke.
