Man critical after being found in roadway

A man was listed in critical condition at a local hospital after he was found lying in the 1700 block of Main Street at about 4:36 a.m. Sunday with a head wound, police said.

Paramedics and city firefighters were already assisting the man, who was unconscious, said Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Jeremy Webb.

The man had syringe needles near his body and appeared to be under the influence of drugs, Webb said.

Webb said it wasn't clear what caused the man's injury. The man was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Police said the injury appeared to be consistent with a fall or blunt force trauma and wasn't likely caused by a bullet or knife.

A short time later police found a second man, also carrying syringe needles, who told officers that he saw what had happened to the victim. The man told police that he was taking opioids and he had last shot up a few hours before officers arrived, Webb said.

The man then began explaining that the victim had fallen or been beaten, but continued to change his story as officers questioned him, Webb said.

Officers became concerned about the man's medical state and transported him to a local hospital. His condition was not available at noon Sunday.

Webb said there are no criminal charges filed against the men at this time. Neither of the men had been identified Sunday morning.
