Big Ten makes divisional split official

The Big Ten on Sunday announced a divisional realignment and expansion of the conference season.

With the additions of Maryland and Rutgers, the conference will change its divisions to a geographic setup starting in 2014.

The East will feature Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland. The West will have Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.

The Hoosiers and Boilermakers will have a protected inter-divisional rivalry, the only cross-league guarantee game in football. The Big Ten season will also stretch to nine games as of 2016.

“We looked at lots of data and discussed multiple options,” Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke said in a statement. “The east/west split seemed to make the most sense as long as the Bucket game was protected.”
