MICHIGAN CITY – Police in a northern Indiana city are collecting unwanted guns to keep them from ending up on the streets.
The annual Michigan City police “Get More Buck for Your Bang” event continues through Saturday. Gun owners who turn in handguns they no longer want receive a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. Rifles bring $25 cards.
Michael Bechinske tells WSBT-TV he’s giving up his .25 caliber pistol. He says it’s a “gut gun” and isn’t safe to have or use.
Since 2007, police have collected more than 450 weapons.
Sgt. Chris Yagelski says police aren’t worried about people having guns in their homes. They’re concerned that those guns might be stolen.
Rifles are melted down at a local steel mill. Handguns and collectables are displayed in a bullet proof case.
