FORT WAYNE – Although Earth Day was observed Monday, Fort Wayne City Utilities will continue the celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Camp Scott Wetlands, 3615 Oxford St.
The Camp Scott wetlands were built by City Utilities to store and treat stormwater runoff from several neighborhoods around McMillen Park.
Water is collected from the neighborhoods in storm sewers and is pumped to the wetlands from a large holding tank under the park. The site is home to wildlife including frogs and turtles, ducks, geese, native songbirds and migrating waterfowl such as green herons and egrets.
The Earth Day event will feature the City Utilities Camp Scott Earth Day photo contest and staff demonstrating basic water quality-testing techniques to show how lawn-care practices can help protect water quality. All children will receive a packet of wetland-related activities to take home. Light refreshments will be provided.
