FORT WAYNE – The Allen County Commissioners on Friday approved the zoning change needed for a proposed $10 million Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity subdivision.
The Allen County Plan Commission approved the non-profit organization's first-ever major housing addition April 11 despite neighbors' fears that an affordable-housing addition would create several problems, including lower property values.
The 120-home development on West Cook Road, next to the Raven's Cove subdivision on the city's northwest side, will cover 39 acres and is known as Fuller's Landing.
The homes planned will cost $108,000 to $116,000 – a range Habitat officials say is comparable to nearby homes. Fuller's Landing will feature three-bedroom ranch and two-story houses, most spanning 1,100 square feet. Walking trails, a playground and other amenities are planned; officials hope to begin work on the home by the fall.
Commissioners asked questions about the complaints raised by neighbors, but were reassured by Department of Planning Services staff, who said the homes proposed, when viewed on a square-foot basis, have comparable or higher values than those in Raven's Cove.
