Home invasion nets 45-year term

FORT WAYNE -- A 30-year-old Gary man was sentenced Tuesday to 45 years in prison for an October home invasion robbery.

Mark F. Johnson was arrested shortly after he and another person robbed a home in the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. According to court documents, they broke into the home about 5 a.m. on Oct. 13, used a stun gun on the man in the home and kicked him in the face. They tied up the family with zip ties at gunpoint and made off with cash, a car, and a computer.

Johnson was caught later after a brief chase and confessed.

He pleaded guilty earlier this year to burglary causing serious bodily injury. Charges of criminal confinement armed with a deadly weapon, auto theft, resisting police and carrying a handgun without a license were dismissed.

Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull sentenced Johnson to 45 years, citing Johnson’s prior convictions for reckless homicide, handgun possession and a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
