Blackmons heading to Marion

James Blackmon Sr. is indeed headed to Marion.

The Marion school board unanimously approved the hiring of the boys basketball coach, formerly of Bishop Luers, at a meeting today.

It ended days of speculation about the highly regarded coach, who was 146-63 in nine years with the Knights, winning Class 2A state championships in 2008 and 2009.

He now returns to his alma mater -- he graduated in 1983 and his number is retired at Marion -- but this storyline is familiar. Blackmon accepted the Marion job in 2011, but reneged three weeks later to return to Luers.

This time, the decision to leave the Knights will reverberate in several respects, since he will bring with him his sons James Jr. and Vijay.

James Blackmon Jr. is a junior, who has committed to play his college basketball at Indiana University, and Vijay is a highly touted freshman who has an offer from the Hoosiers.

James Blackmon Sr. confirmed his sons will play for the Giants next season.
