Report: Coach set to leave Luers

Blackmon Sr. would also take his two sons to Marion

Blackmon Sr.

– According to a television report Friday, Bishop Luers boys basketball coach James Blackmon Sr. will become the coach at Marion, his alma mater.

Citing two sources close to the situation, Indiana’s NewsCenter reported that Blackmon will be the new Giants’ coach. The next school board meeting is Wednesday.

Messages were left Friday for Blackmon and Marion athletic director Greg Peden, the former boys basketball coach at Northrop.

Sources have told The Journal Gazette that Blackmon interviewed for the position Thursday.

Bishop Luers athletic director Jim Huth told The Journal Gazette “(Blackmon) has not talked to us” and that he has a meeting scheduled next week with Blackmon.

Blackmon is 146-63 in nine years at Luers, with Class 2A state championships in 2008 and 2009.

According to the TV report, which first appeared on Twitter, Blackmon’s two sons – junior James Blackmon Jr. and freshman Vijay Blackmon – would also go to Marion. Blackmon Jr. is an Indiana recruit, and Vijay Blackmon has an offer from IU.

Two years ago, Blackmon was hired as the Giants’ coach but returned to Luers even after the Marion school board had confirmed his hiring.

Also on Friday, the Marion Chronicle-Tribune’s Matt Wilson reported on Twitter that Marion School Corp. Superintendent Steve Edwards said he “hopes” to hire a basketball coach at Wednesday’s meeting, and there are about 20 applicants for the position. Edwards confirmed to Wilson that Blackmon is one of those applicants.

Blackmon wrote in a text Thursday to Marion-Chronicle Tribune: “I have nothing new to report at this time.”

Billy Shepherd resigned as the Giants’ coach a couple of weeks ago.
