Area jobless rate declines for 2nd month

Unemployment in metropolitan Fort Wayne declined for the second consecutive month in March with an 8.8 percent jobless rate, state officials said Friday.

The results are better than February’s 8.9 percent showing, according to preliminary data from the Department of Workforce Development. Metro Fort Wayne is composed of Allen, Whitley and Wells counties.

Indiana, however, saw no change in the number of Hoosiers out of work in March, with a seasonally adjusted rate of 8.7 percent.

“The Hoosier State has more manufacturing jobs as a percentage of our private sector than any other state in the U.S. and we continue to experience real, tangible proof of sustained growth and propensity for expansion potential,” Scott Sanders, commissioner of the department, said in a statement.
