Gun-control amendment fails

The U.S. Senate defeated an amendment Wednesday that would have expanded criminal background checks on gun sales to include gun shows and online purchases.

The vote was 54-46 in favor of the proposal. Sixty affirmative votes were required for passage.

Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., voted in favor of the legislation, while Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., voted against it.
