Yvonne Roe and her fiancé, Larry Coleman, made the decision to relocate from the East Coast to Roanoke after seeing other family members make the move.
When they settled into the area a year and a half ago, though, the couple found themselves missing home – a taste of home.
So last month, they opened A Taste of Philly, 4227 E. Station Road in Roanoke.
The restaurant, which has limited seating and is primarily carry-out, has a full-service deli and serves East Coast-style subs and hot and cold sandwiches.
The favorite, Roe says, has been the Philadelphia cheesesteak, which can be made to a customer’s specifications – cheese whiz or melted American slices.
The cold Italian sandwich is also popular and made with imported ham.
We have the rolls shipped in, Roe says. They are very light and airy – so you’re not eating a bread sandwich.
