Police-action shooting kills 1 in NW Ohio

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting Wednesday afternoon involving a Celina police officer that left one person dead.

Sheriff Jeff Grey said the Celina Police Department requested the sheriff’s department step in after a 12-year veteran of its force shot a St. Marys man who died later at an area hospital.

The county 911 center got a call at 12:38 p.m. about a man walking west on Market Street wearing only a cowboy hat, shorts and sandals, with a gun tucked into his pants. The caller told police the man took the gun out, waved it around but did not point it at anyone.

Patrolman Andy Regedanz, 33, found him in the parking lot of Lake Shore Motor Sales, 700 E. Market St., according to a written statement from the sheriff’s department.

It said “Shots were fired. The suspect was hit.”

The officer called for EMS and the man was transported to Mercer Health, where he died. The officer was not injured.

The deceased has been identified as Robert Hensley, 39, of Mott Street in St. Marys.

No further information will be released until the investigation is complete, the sheriff said in the written statement.
