Murder charge filed in slaying of 17-year-old

Allen County prosecutors filed a formal murder charge Thursday against Deadrian Boykins in connection with the April 3 shooting death of 17-year-old Elijah O. Freeman.

Boykins, 19, of the 1400 block of Lillie Street, was arrested Friday evening by Fort Wayne police officers on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery.

Freeman, a South Side High School student, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the back yard of a home in the 900 block of Hugh Street just before noon April 3. He died before paramedics could take him to a local hospital.

Witnesses told police at least two people chased Freeman down an alley and fired at him six to seven times. Court documents filed Thursday morning identify only one gunman giving chase to Freeman.

After being shot, Freeman ran a few feet before collapsing next to the foundation of a house, police said.

Freeman's death was the 15th homicide in Allen County this year, according to the county coroner's office.
