Motorcyclist in pole crash nearly 3 times legal limit, police say

FORT WAYNE – A motorcyclist who was critically injured in a crash with a light pole Tuesday evening has been identified.

Fort Wayne police said Richard Petersen, 47, of Fort Wayne, remained in critical condition Wednesday morning.

Police said Petersen's blood-alcohol level tested at 0.22 percent and that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The legal limit to drive in Indiana is 0.08 percent.

Petersen was heading north in the 1300 block of Leesburg Road, near the University of Saint Francis, when the motorcycle crashed about 7:30 p.m., police said.

Witnesses told investigators the cycle failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line and struck a curb on the west side of the road. After hitting the curb, it struck a light pole, police said.
