Pet Expo to host record number of shelters

Statement as issued Wednesday by the Allen County SPCA:

Fort Wayne, Ind., April 10, 2013 – The Allen County SPCA is set to welcome 25 animal rescue organizations to the Northern Indiana Pet Expo on April 20-21 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. “We are proud to be hosting more rescues and shelters than ever before,” said shelter director Jessica Henry. “Rescues from as far away as Cincinnati, OH are slated to bring their adoptable pets to our event, meaning that several hundred animals will find their forever homes over the course of the weekend.”

Additionally, a generous grant from the Petco Foundation will be funding free microchips for participating rescue animals. “The mission of the Petco Foundation and the Allen County SPCA is to save lives and reduce the incidence of unnecessary animal euthanasia in this country. Events that raise awareness of shelter animals are an important part of what we do,” said Henry.

Participating rescues range from breed-specific organizations like GRRACE Golden Retriever Rescue, Indiana Italian Greyhound Rescue, and Cincinnati Schnauzer Rescue to all-breed shelters like Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control, One Dog at a Time and the Allen County SPCA to name a few. Henry stated, “I encourage everyone to come out to the event, if only to see the amazing array of adoptable pets!”

The Northern Indiana Pet Expo is an annual event showcasing hundreds of adoptable pets from around the tri-state region. Pet-related vendors, boutiques, artisans and crafters will also be on hand with unique items for sale. Attendees will be treated to free seminars from experts on such topics as pet massage, service dog training and pet food selection. A blessing of the pets by Fr. Joe Gaughan is planned for Sunday afternoon, with performances by the Canine Stars of Fort Collins, Colorado all weekend long. Area kids will enjoy children’s authors, a moonwalk and pony rides from Shadarobah Horse Rescue in the Expo Kids’ Area.

Tickets are available at the door. $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children (kids under 5 free) and $1 for leashed and healthy pets. Expo hours are 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Discount coupons are available at Petco, 315 E. Coliseum Blvd.

Details on bringing pets to the Expo, a complete schedule of events and other information are available at www.northernindianapetexpo.org or by calling the Allen County SPCA.
