Be nice to your cows, dairy consultant says

Treatment of cows is crucial to milk quality – even if that means talking to them.

Hey, it works on plants.

"You have to be aware of how they're feeling," said Fabian Bernal, a dairy consultant for the Dairy Farmers of America. "The more you can put them in natural surroundings, the better."

Bernal spoke to about 70 dairy professionals on Tuesday during the 2013 Indiana Milk Quality Conference at Don Hall's Guesthouse in Fort Wayne. The two-day event, which ends Wednesday, is hosted by the Indiana Milk Quality Professionals Inc.

Organizers are expecting more than 200 dairy enthusiasts to take part in the event that will feature various talks, presentations and related activities.
