Students hurt, driver dead in school bus rollover

VALLECITOS, N.M. – The school bus driver who died at the scene of a roll over in northern New Mexico has been identified.

Authorities said 69-year-old Pay Valdez was behind the wheel when the Mesa Vista school bus somehow fell off the road near Vallecitos and lodged in an embankment. At least nine children were injured in the crash in a mountainous area of Carson National Forest.

Investigators said the six injured students were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for what district superintendent Tracie Phillips described as broken bones and scratches.

Authorities said an 8-year-old suffered a broken back and 16-year-old had a broken jaw.

Three other children were treated at the scene.

It was not clear if Valdez had a heart attack or died from the crash, authorities said.
