Fire rousts 3, destroys house

3 departments fight afternoon blaze, but house a total loss

Three adults escaped an intense fire that destroyed a house Sunday afternoon and launched a cloud of smoke over a neighborhood northeast of Fort Wayne.

A neighbor who saw flames coming from the attached garage of the house alerted authorities shortly after 1:30 p.m., and fire crews were dispatched to the home at 9218 Blazing Woods Trail in the Hunters Glen housing addition along St. Joe Road.

Northeast Allen County Fire Chief Chad Jacobs said the three adults inside had been sleeping but they awoke in time to safely flee the house before firefighters arrived.

Because of the fire’s intensity, firefighters attacked the blaze from outside using a ladder truck. As crews doused the flames, multiple oxygen tanks in the home exploded. The fire melted and burned the siding of neighboring houses – one to the north and another to the south.

About 30 firefighters from St. Joseph Township, Northeast Allen County and Fort Wayne fire departments were sent to the blaze.

It took 30 to 45 minutes to bring the flames under control, Jacobs said. No firefighters reported injuries.

The fire destroyed the front of the two-story house, including the garage, and most of the roof.

Jacobs said the house was a total loss.

The blaze also torched two sport utility vehicles in the driveway.

The cause was under investigation.
