Bluffton's Barker to be honored

School administrators Wayne Barker of Bluffton, Don Gandy of Wheeler and Don Unruh of New Albany will be will be recognized with special awards at the 2013 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association annual Spring Clinic later this month.

The three men each will receive recognition as Administrators of the Year from the IBCA. All will be presented plaques during a ceremony on April 26 during the IBCA annual spring clinic at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis.

These administrators are being honored for their support of programs in their schools -- Gandy as a principal, Barker as a superintendent and Unruh as an athletic director. Gandy is the honoree from District 1. Barker is being cited from District 2. Unruh is the recipient from District 3. Barker is in his fourth year as superintendent of Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District, a district he previously served at Bluffton as boys basketball coach and assistant principal for 14 years. Barker began his career in education as a business teacher in 1989 at Carroll. He moved to Cowan High School in 1994 when he received his first boys basketball head coaching opportunity. He then moved to Bluffton a year later. Barker has a 15-year coaching record of 236-107. Gandy is in his seventh year as principal at Wheeler and also serves on the IHSAA Board of Directors. He is a former coach at Rensselaer Central and later served as a teacher and coach at Fort Wayne Elmhurst and Plymouth. He then was an assistant principal at Chesterton and Plymouth before becoming principal at Wheeler in 2006. Unruh has been at New Albany High School for 26 years, the past 14 as athletic director. He previously served as the school's boys basketball coach for 12 seasons, guiding the Bulldogs to the 1996 State Finals and to the 1997 semistate final. Before the move to New Albany, Unruh coached at Springs Valley High School and served as varsity basketball coach at Hancock County High School in Kentucky.

Barker bio

Wayne Barker is in his fourth year as superintendent of Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District and is a passionate advocate for student participation in athletics and extra-curricular activities. In addition, he is a proud supporter of the men and women of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Barker was a varsity basketball coach for 15 years where he compiled an overall record of 236-107. His teams won six conference tournament championships, five conference regular season championships, four sectional championships, one regional championship, one semi-state championship and had one undefeated regular season. Barker was selected as the IBCA’s District 2 Coach of the Year in 2002 and served as an assistant coach on the 2004 Indiana All-Star Team. He served the IBCA for 12 years as a district representative, vice president, president and past president. He has enjoyed combining his love for God and basketball by working Athletes In Action Basketball Camps in Siauliai, Lithuania, and Skopje, Macedonia. Barker began his career in education as a business teacher in 1989 at Carroll in Fort Wayne. He moved on to Cowan High School in that role in 1994 where he got his first boys basketball head coaching opportunity. In 1995, Barker became assistant principal and boys basketball coach at Bluffton High School, where he served for 14 years prior to being named superintendent in 2009. Barker is recently widowed from his wife, Ingrid, of 25 years. He has two children, a daughter, Taylor (19), and a son, Collin (15).
