2 teens arrested in car break-ins at lake

Steuben County deputies have arrested two teenagers accused of breaking into vehicles over the weekend in the Lake James area, according to the sheriff’s department.

A theft from an unlocked vehicle was reported about 2 a.m. Sunday near the Lake James Golf Course. After responding to the call, deputies noticed a suspicious vehicle.

In that vehicle, deputies found Christian Garcia, 19, and a 17-year-old boy, along with items stolen from the vehicle by the golf course, the department said.

Garcia and the teen, both from Angola, admitted to the reported theft and to other overnight thefts from unlocked vehicles in the Lake James area, the department said.

Investigators recovered items stolen during the other thefts, which were not reported. Anyone missing items from their vehicle since the weekend is asked to call the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department at 668-1000, ext. 5000.

Juvenile charges were filed against the 17-year-old through the Steuben County Probation Department. Garcia faces a felony count of theft and misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of alcohol. He was being held Tuesday at the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $5,000.
