Railroad tracks near downtown closed after train plows into pickup truck

A freight train plowed into an unoccupied pickup truck late Tuesday near a railroad crossing on Fort Wayne's east side and dragged it about 100 yards, city police said.

The truck driver had been headed south on South Anthony Boulevard when he turned west onto the tracks thinking it was East Berry Street, police said. The tracks there run parallel to Berry.

The driver got out of the truck before the train hit it. No injuries were reported.

"It was an accident, man. I just turned too soon," said the driver, who declined to give his name.

The crash happened shortly before 10 p.m. Norfolk Southern workers on the scene expected the crossing near Anthony and Berry would be closed to traffic for several hours until the mangled truck could be removed from the tracks.
