Suspect in Ohio killing dies awaiting trial

TOLEDO – A man scheduled to go on trial next month in the 2009 killing of a disabled Ohio woman has died in prison.

Lucas County sheriff’s Detective Patrick LaPlante says 47-year-old Elhadi Robbins collapsed at the county jail and was pronounced dead at a hospital on Thursday. Foul play is not suspected.

The Toledo Blade reports Robbins had been scheduled to go on trial April 8 in the death of Cindy Sumner.

Sumner disappeared in August 2009 and her body was found about a month later in the basement of a vacant warehouse not far from her Toledo home. She had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and learning disabilities.

Sumner’s mother says she had hoped the trial would provide answers about her daughter’s death.
