Izzo's son's bracket causes family consternation
By MIKE MAROTAP Sports Writer
His son, on the other hand, might one day have a spot on the Duke bench.
Once the family's big secret got out - that Izzo's only son, Steven, picked Duke to beat the Spartans in the Midwest Regional semifinal - it became all the rage in Indianapolis. Even Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski piped in, saying he appreciated Steven's gutsy move so much that he was going to reward him.
"His son will be sitting on our bench and has a scholarship to Duke," Krzyzewski joked. "(Izzo) didn't know that on Facebook and that on Twitter, I've been communicating with him and have arranged that deal. So he (Izzo's son) sold him out. But he sold him out for a good price."
Izzo isn't the only one who has a family member picking against his team.
Krzyzewski noted his granddaughter chose Montana to beat Duke in the national championship game, too, though she doesn't live in the same house as the Duke coach.
Izzo's wife apparently wanted to keep the big pick under wraps.
"You're going to cause me a divorce, you know that? My wife is so mad at me right now," Izzo said with a laugh after nearly choking on his water when asked about it Thursday in Indianapolis.
How could all this happen?
"I tried to be a real parent, you know, not push your kid. Help him make intelligent decisions, like all of us do," Izzo said. "And I said, `Steven, I love you, man. Do it with your head, not your heart. Don't worry about mom or dad.'"
