Report: Receiver to leave Notre Dame

Notre Dame appears to have lost another player from last season's freshman class.

Receiver Davonte' Neal will transfer from Notre Dame, according to a report by Blue and Gold Illustrated.

Neal, a 5-foot-9, 178-pounder form Scottsdale, Ariz., handled punt returns from the Irish last season. He returned 21 punts for 46 (2.2 per return) with a long of 11 yards.

If Neal does leave the program, he will join quarterback Gunner Kiel as a one-year player at Notre Dame.

Kiel, who didn't play last season and ran Notre Dame's scout team, decided to transfer before the Irish began spring practice. Notre Dame opened spring camp Wednesday.

Neal's decision comes after the first four practices of the spring.

Neal signed with Notre Dame three weeks after last year's national signing day. The former four-star prospect signed with the Irish on Feb. 21, 2012.

Neal's father, Luke, told Blue and Gold Illustrated that his son is leaving Notre Dame to be closer to home and his six-week-old daughter the receiver has with his long-time girlfriend.

Neal would have to sit out next season and have three years of eligibility at the program he transfers to.
