Homestead girls to play in Classic

The Homestead girls basketball team will be making the school's first-ever appearance in the Hall of Fame Classic on Dec. 27 at New Castle High School.

The Spartans will face Rushville in a Classic semifinal at 11 a.m. Defending Class 4A state champion Bedford North Lawrence and Pike will play in the other semifinal at 12:30 p.m.

The consolation game will be at 6 p.m., followed by the championship game at 7:45 p.m.

No Homestead basketball program – girls or boys – has played in the Hall of Fame Classic.

The Spartans (21-4 last year) will return all five starters after the lone senior, Emily Bley, missed all but three games last season.

Homestead will be led by Junior All-Star Sydney Buck (a Butler recruit) and sophomore point guard Josie Fisher (an IPFW recruit).

The Spartans will also return sophomore Grace German and freshman Lindley Kistler.

German is the great-granddaughter of Hall of Fame inductee and former Indiana University coach Branch McCracken.

The Spartans will be the second NHC girls team to play in the Classic after Norwell was the 2011 runner-up.

Rushville will be making a record fifth appearance in the girls Classic. The Lions won the 2009 championship, were runners-up in 1984 and participants in 1989 and 1993.

Rushville will return four starters from a 22-4 regional championship team this last season.

The Lions' Mackenzie Campbell was named a Junior All-Star for this summer's games.
