Goaltender Charlie Effinger was stupendous – he stopped 40 of 41 shots, including a Brandon Blandina penalty shot in overtime – but the Komets still lost their third straight game.
Eric Delong’s goal on the final shot of a shootout gave the Elmira Jackals a 2-1 victory, in front of 4,193 fans at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y., on Saturday night.
The Komets (32-33-4), who have only three games remaining in their first ECHL season, had been outscored 13-4 in their previous two games.
That included a 5-2 loss at Elmira on Friday night. Jean Bourbeau’s goal in the second period put the Jackals up again, but Matt Syroczynski answered on a power play late in the third period.
Ian Keserich stopped 29 shots for the Jackals, then turned away 4 of 5 shootout attempts.
Defenseman Jamie Milam was the only Komet to foil him, in the first round.
But Matt Carter immediately answered for the Jackals (38-23-7).
Fort Wayne, which missed the playoffs for the first time since 2002, plays host to Toledo on Wednesday.
