All Zestos to be open this week

Sure, Fort Wayne saw 10-plus inches of snow last week, but that can’t stop the spring: The Zesto Ice Cream location at 5740 Falls Drive opened Saturday, and the other three Fort Wayne locations (2225 Broadway, 210 E. Washington Center Road and 6015 St. Joe Center Road) are set to open Friday, says Chris Conner, who owns the Broadway location.

Opening day can switch from year to year based on the weather. As of last week, Conner says, he was rethinking his Friday open date because of the weather, but the National Weather Service forecast shows a high in the upper 40s Friday.

Some of us have already started to think out our first order of the season. Marshmallow sauce on chocolate ice cream? Or a hot fudge malt? Maybe a chocolate chip cookie dough and brownie Razzle?

New menu items

•Smokey Bones, 1203 Apple Glen Blvd., is hosting a party to celebrate its new beverage book and menu items. From 7 to 9 p.m. today, servers will bring out a new dish to try every 15 minutes, day bartender Amy Bechtel says. The menu will feature select food and beverage sample pairings.

The new items debuted recently, Bechtel says, including stuffed cheeseburgers, a brisket melt sandwich and cheesy bites served with two dipping sauces.

Smokey Bones also has 14 new cocktails, one new draft beer and nine new bottled beers. Some of the most popular cocktails since debuting have been the diamond margarita, a low-cal drink with fresh squeezed orange and lime juice, and the Smoking Cucumber Bloody Mary, with barbecue sauce and cucumber vodka.

•B. Antonio’s Pizza, 5417 Meijer Drive, debuted a new menu last week, including new items, some smaller portions and a dedicated gluten-free section. The restaurant had always had gluten-free offerings, owner Ben Nighswander says, but this is the first time they’ve been on-menu. The options include a gluten-free pizza crust and chicken fingers.

The restaurant has taken its large calzone off the menu and added a mini calzone, at 7 inches. Items that had sold well as special features also found a permanent spot on the menu, including a Tuscan chicken pizza, a mac and cheese pizza and a pulled pork pizza.

•DeBrand Fine Chocolates has brought out its Easter-themed menu items. The Rocky Road Egg mixes DeBrand vanilla marshmallows, caramel and almonds and pecan halves mixed with dark or milk chocolate. Filled eggs, bunnies and egg-shaped truffles also are available.

Opening, closed

•6 Autumns Food & Spirits, 3855 N. Indiana 127 in Angola, opened Monday with a limited menu. Co-owner Marty Hayward says the full menu will be available within a month. The restaurant is focused on local items – pork and poultry from Gunthrop Farms, based in LaGrange, and house wine from Satek Winery, in Fremont.

The restaurant doesn’t buy premade food, Hayward says, which caused some problems with the suppliers.

“It was a struggle to convince suppliers a year ago that we needed them to sell us ingredients, and we would turn the ingredients into food,” she says. “They had a hard time with that” and insisted how easy it is to microwave food items.

6 Autumns – a name that comes from an article she read on a landscape architect that started “Six autumns ago” – also has a full bar with a heavy focus on bourbons, with 27 available. Hayward and her husband, who owns 6 Autumns with her, took a spring break trip to tour bourbon distilleries in Kentucky. Hayward says she hopes to increase that number. She also hopes to eventually offer more than 100 whiskeys.

•According to the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health, Enzo’s Pizza, located in the Jefferson Pointe food court, has closed. The phone number is disconnected.

•There is a sign at 110 W. Columbia St. that says Vanessa’s Café will be coming soon. The café, nestled between Cancun on the Landing and a lawyer’s office, shares its breakfast and lunch specials on the sign – breakfast starting at $4.99 and lunch starting at $5.95 – and will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

•There is an “opening soon” sign at 511 E. Dupont Road for Pita Village. The restaurant will be next to Radio Shack in the plaza as Jamison Specialty Meats.

•According to Jefferson Pointe’s Facebook page, a Red Mango will be opening near Starbucks and Marshalls this summer. Red Mango is a Dallas-based frozen yogurt franchise. Find more information, including a menu, at
