A guest blog

On the second day of my "externship" at The Journal Gazette, I was tasked with shadowing two sports writers, Justin Cohn and Ben Smith.

The focus of the night was the hockey game between the Komets and the Evansville Icemen – both of whom have been struggling this year.

The Icemen came into the game with a 22-35-5 record and are currently at the bottom of the league.

Previously a championship-caliber team, the Komets are not even mediocre at 29-30-3.

The pace of the first two periods could be classified as slow and slower, with the quality reflecting where both teams stand this season.

All-in-all, the game up to the second period was fairly entertaining and being in the press box added to the excitement with the various reporters and commentators all going about their jobs.

At the end of the second period, the score was 3-2 in the Komets' favor.

Justin A. Cohn, pro sports coordinator for The Journal Gazette, has been covering the Fort Wayne Komets since 1997. His reporting includes game stories from home and away, features about the players and personalities associated with the Komets, plus coverage of issues affecting hockey at all levels. A native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Cohn graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. He can be reached at 260-461-8429 or by email at jcohn@jg.net.
