Grace men reach quarters

– For the second time in two days, Grace won by double digits with a 72-53 victory over California Maritime on Friday and advanced into the quarterfinal round of the NAIA Division II tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.

The Lancers (21-9) will play the winner of Friday’s late game between Dakota State (22-9) and St. Thomas, Fla. (20-11) at 8 p.m. today.

Tannan Peters scored a pair of buckets to stake Grace to an early 5-0 lead.

Ahead 22-19 at the half, Grace went on a 14-0 run early in the second half to distance itself from Cal Maritime (24-7).

Karl Columbus had eight of his 18 points in the Lancers’ surge. He also added nine rebounds.

Elliot Smith went 6 of 10 from the floor and 4 of 7 from three-point range for 18 points.

In the tournament opener, Grace defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 93-69.
