MLK Memorial Bridge: The city and local design firm DLZ Indiana pick up a few more awards for the new bridge, including an achievement award from the Indiana Partnership for Transportation Quality and an engineering excellence award from American Council of Engineering Companies.

Canterbury Cavaliers: The girls basketball team beats Vincennes Rivet 42-35 to win its fifth Class A state title in six years. Congrats also to the South Side Archers team, which made the final game but fell to Bedford North Lawrence by just three points.

Star Wars fans: Carrie Fisher says she will reprise her role as Princess Leia from the first trilogy in a new Star Wars Episode 7.

Indiana Supreme Court: The justices let stand an appeals court ruling ordering a new hearing for Paul Gingerich, who was charged with murder at age 12. The appeals court ruled the hearing that waived him into adult court was woefully inadequate.

BNSF Railway: The subsidiary of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway plans to begin testing running its locomotives on natural gas. The company, the Wall Street Journal reports, is one of the nation’s largest buyers of diesel fuel.

Tossups

Rand Paul: The tea party senator from Kentucky single-handedly holds up the confirmation of John Brennan as CIA director with a filibuster, earning criticism from fellow Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham. But he does get what he wanted: a statement from the attorney general saying the president has no authority to order a drone strike in the U.S. against an American citizen.

Glenda Ritz: Indiana House Republicans criticize the new Democratic superintendent of public instruction for spending $86,000 to renovate office space with new walls. But the work was apparently needed – and the cost is a pittance compared with the $750,000 renovation Republican state reps plan for their own chamber.

Losers

California: With its concentration of defense industries and large population, the state stands to take more than 10 percent of the sequestration hit. The $9 billion loss in federal funds this year comes just as the state was getting back on its feet financially.

Ron Johnson: The clock is ticking for the CEO of J.C. Penney after a string of missteps.

Milestones

Bonnie Franklin: The actress played the divorced mother of characters portrayed by Valerie Bertinelli and MacKenzie Phillips in “One Day at Time,” a show well known to Hoosiers because it was one of the rare series based in Indianapolis. She died at 69.

Air travel: Nearly a dozen years after 9/11, the Transportation Security Administration lifts the ban on carrying penknives and corkscrews along with ski poles and certain other sporting equipment on flights.
